| Three
tracks here from Northern Ireland's Honey For Christ, a band who
have been around on the circuit for quite a while now, and during
the opening minute or so of opener and title track "Forging Iron
Will", it's possible to see that these guys have confidence in what
they are doing, delivering melodic thrashy power metal in a very
strong way. Some good quality riffs, energetic, catchy, and full
of passion, with some well controlled singing over the top.
Now, the vocals are not my cup of tea, but they are done well it
has to be remarked. A nice drop in pace a couple of minutes in adds
some good depth to the song, and so a good start is made. "Movements
below the surface" is an epic by all accounts. Starting off sounding
unbelievably like Opeth, same style, same mood, similar delivery.
Again the singing comes in and I almost expect not to like this,
but it works well, some very good riffs keep me more into it than
anything else though, and this song has elements of Nevermore, Candlemass,
and refrains from going into really cheesy power rock metal territory
with the whole wailing vocals escapades. Honey For Christ manage
to retain a nice, dark, thrash mood throughout most of the songs
in fact, even when they aren't playing the faster riffs.
The opening to "The Heretic Hook" has a certain melodic Swedish
death rock feel to it, and at times sounds like "Swansong" era Carcass,
maybe with hints of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, that sort of thing,
a nice 100 seconds worth of instrumentation. Like I said, I would
have preferred heavier vocals, but that's my chosen like, but for
delivery and on pitch, the singer has done pretty well, and pieced
together some pretty good patterns with the music.
A good little EP here from Honey For Christ.
